In-person conversations offer the most information in the shortest period of time. Natural speaking pauses allow people to change the subject easily. Plus, you can glean information from the person’s tone and inflection. Phone conversations convey more information in a shorter time span simply because most people talk faster than they can type. Chat conversations are a lot like IM conversations, except shorter. Changing the subject is easy….you just introduce it in a new email or append it to a reply to an existing thread. Email conversations, even those between two people, often splinter into different threads. Email messages cover a variety of topics at once, often with extensive context from past emails built in. It’s sometimes difficult to change the subject without interrupting the flow of the conversation. There’s very little context from one message to the next…it’s almost stream of consciousness.
Very rarely, two topics may be going at the same time. IM messages tend to string along from topic to topic, one topic at a time. It’s interesting how the communication that happens via instant messaging is different from other types of communication: Plenty of better servers out there so give this one a miss.I’ve been using ICQ a little bit over the last couple days. I’ve been chatting on here for 5 years and it’s getting worse, putting in suggestions gets you banned, trying to discuss and work out issues gets you banned. Matrix likes to constantly kill users connections without just cause. Some of the ircops are no better, chris will be having a bad day so he takes out his anger on innocent chatters. They constantly break their own rules to persecute chatters that their instigators dislike. The worst moderators are kentuckychick, vibes, devilish and inca. Favouritism is high on the moderators agenda to protect the instigators that create issues, make other chatters react. They might be quick to deal with racism, but they constantly confuse nationalism with racism. They have rules that the ircops and moderators continually twist. Over controlled, voice concerns and you’re banned for channel harassment.
